Alice in Venice

My reality is just different from yours,” announces the Cheshire cat to Alice inside the slant and circular ambience of their forest.

Margarita Krivitsky’s ‘Alice in Venice’ opens the viewer’s gaze – their very being – to a new reality. A reality that shifts and glides, not just across time, but the geographical markers of this planet. Alice left Edwardian Britain to follow her imagination into new realms, meeting creatures from deep in her psyche along the way.

Margarita Krivitsky uses Alice as a vehicle for her own journey into the collective human psyche via Venice, allowing viewers to follow suit and have their own exploratory experience.

In this collection, Alice has fallen down a rabbit hole, but not as we know it. The symbolic and metaphysical tunnel created by Lewis Carrol is retrofitted with new ideas, dark and sparkly new detail: where once there were meadows and riverboats, now are Renaissance facades and grottoes, turrets and gondolas. And the odd cassowary.

The exhibition will be opened by David McAllister Artistic Director of the Australian Ballet at Yarra Sculpture Gallery, 117 Vere Street Abbotsford from 4pm to 6pm, Sunday August 19 2018.
